World Coffee Conference: Why in the News?

India, with its rich culture and heritage, is about to make history as it hosts the first ever World Coffee Conference.
The conference, which is organised by the Coffee Board of India, the MoTI, and the ICOI, marks a milestone in India’s journey in the global coffee market.
India’s rich history in coffee cultivation dates back to the 17th century. India’s position as the 6th largest coffee producer in the world is a testament to the country’s growth in the coffee market.

Coffee was first introduced to the Indian subcontinent in the late 17th century by an Indian traveler who smuggled seven beans from Yemen.
However, commercial coffee cultivation began to take off during the middle of the 19th century, especially in the region of Mysore.

The Dutch also contributed to the growth of coffee cultivation during the occupation of some parts of India.

Today, India boasts a diverse geographical distribution of coffee plantations across states like Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and even northeastern regions like Araku Valley in Andhra Pradesh, and Manipur and Mizoram. Among these, Karnataka stands out as the major producer, contributing approximately 70% of India’s total coffee production.

India’s presence in the global coffee market cannot be understated.
Recent statistics from Statista place India as the sixth largest producer of coffee globally, following giants like Brazil, Vietnam, Colombia, Indonesia, and Ethiopia. Moreover, India’s coffee blends, particularly those from South India, have gained attention for their unique flavors and purported health benefits, with chicory-infused blends and milk coffees becoming increasingly popular.

With the theme of “Sustainability through Circular Economy and Regenerative Agriculture,” the WCC aims to address pressing issues facing the coffee industry, such as climate change, sustainable farming practices, and economic resilience.
The adoption of regenerative agriculture practices not only ensures the longevity of coffee cultivation but also promotes environmental conservation and community well-being.

The Coffee Board of India, established under the Coffee Act of 1942, plays a pivotal role in overseeing and promoting the Indian coffee industry.
Functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, the Board focuses on various aspects including research, extension services, development initiatives, market intelligence, and both domestic and international promotion of Indian coffee.
