India has taken a significant step in its environmental conservation efforts with the recent designation of the Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries in Bihar as wetlands of international importance under the Ramsar Convention.

These sanctuaries, covering 791 hectares and 333 hectares respectively, are surrounded by dry deciduous forests and rolling hills.

Nagi Bird Sanctuary, established in 1987, spans 2.14 square kilometers and is located adjacent to the Nakti Dam.
This sanctuary was initially created to serve local irrigation needs but has since become a refuge for local flora and migratory birds. Similarly, Nakti Bird Sanctuary, established in 1990, covers 3.74 square kilometers and serves as a vital habitat for numerous bird species.
Although located in the Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh, it is often mentioned in conjunction with Nagi due to their shared ecological significance.

The Ramsar Convention, established in 1971 in the Iranian city of Ramsar, aims to protect wetlands of international importance.
The inclusion of the Nagi and Nakti Bird Sanctuaries in this prestigious list highlights their environmental value, not only for wildlife conservation but also for their role in meeting local water needs and providing recreational opportunities.

These sanctuaries are home to over 150 species of birds, mammals, fish, and aquatic plants.
